A review of the book A Musical Storm

The book A Musical Storm consisting of 250 odd pages on the life of A.R.Rahman make an interesting read but into a few pages, you start the feel into a book like this and an autobiography. The author of the book Kamini Mathai would have done some serious digging to complete this book on the life of music maestro. The book is all text and no pictures making it even more voluminous.

The narrative starts giving out the details of Rahman’s early life as a kid and how he had to make sacrifices to help his family. Now Kamini keeps you into that phase of his life for so long that you start to lose interest. You want to read how he became a success story and she strays on to talking about his father’s illness. She moves on to the time when he created his first jingles. She has also added the point of views of his family members and friends.

Then comes a very interesting chapter in his life. The time he converted to Islam and changed his name from Dileep to Rahman. He has reasons to believe that all the success came after he took that leap of faith. She then talks about him as a person and how he has always been shy and reluctant to speak in public.

However, that seems to have changed past the success of Slumdog Millionaire. Also revealed is that he might make a tune in a day but to create a masterpiece the maestro may take up to half a year. There were roadblock in his growing days professionally but his fan following and popularity grew day by day. One thing that he has always maintained is no vulgarity in his songs.
