Bollywood romantic drama flick, Achhut Kanya, directed by Franz Osten and written by Niranjan Pal was released in the year 1936. The movie starred Ashok Kumar and Devika Rani in lead roles while Kusum Kumari, P. F. Pithawala, Pramila, Kishori Lal, Kamta Prasad, Ishrat and Anwari also played significant characters in the film. The hit veteran music of the movie was directed by the female music director Saraswati Devi while the songs were rendered by Devika Rani and Saraswati Devi herself.

The movie starts with a guy who is trying to kill his wife at a railway crossing. Then the movie goes in past. Kasturi ( Devika Rani ) belongs to the untouchable category of Harijans. She is only daughter of the railway crossing guard, Dukhia ( Prasad ). On the otherhnad, the hero of the story, Pratap ( Ashok Kumar ) belongs to a brahmin family. He is the only son of a grocer named Mohan ( Pithawala ). The whole story of the movie revolves around the tragic love story of Kasturi and Pratap.

The movie is still remebered for the excellent performances of Ashok Kumar and Devika Rani. Also the movie holds the record of having the first female music director of the Hindi cinema in the form of Saraswati Devi. The movie is a cult classic and definately worths a watch.
