Alka Yagnik was born in a Gujarati family on 20 March 1966 in Calcutta. Both of her parents were trained classical singer. Alka too got the training of classical singing by her mother. She began singing bhajans for Radio at the age of only six. She started her career in bollywood with the famous song ‘ Mere angne mein tumhara kya kaam hai‘ of Amitabh Bachchan starrer Laawaris. But she eventually shot the fame with the famous track ‘Ek do teen chaar paanch che saat‘ shot on Madhuri Dixit in the film Tezaab. The success of that particular song completely changed her life. She won her first Filmfare Award for the category of Best Female Playback Singer for the song.

Alka has sung in many languages like Hindi, Punjabi, Bengali etc. Her versatile voice and sweetness matched well with every type of song which she has sung for the films. Infact she was even marked as the next Lata Mangeshkar at that time. She won three consecutive Filmfare awards for Best Female Playback Singer category from year 1999 to 2001. Even today Alka Yagnik is one of the leading female playback singers in the Hindi music industry.
