Contemporary Devdas: Anurag Kashyap’s “Dev D”
Dev D is the latest venture of Anurag Kashyap. He is very busy nowadays giving finishing touches to the movie. Anurag Kashyap is the same director who directed “Bow barracks forever”. He was very much appreciated for that movie. And this time the film-maker is trying to make a Contemporary Devdas.
“Devdas” is one of the famous novels of Sarat Chandra Chottopadhay. It is among the few novels which have created a sense of curiosity among the various film-makers. The love-saga of Devdas and Paro and one sided love of Chandramukhi have been depicted on the screens of Indian cinema a number of times. Devdas’s story has been depicted twice in Bollywood. However, Anurag’s attempt is first of its kind. He has tried to depict the modern version of Devdas. Devdas has also been depicted in Tollywood also.
Kashyap feels that Sarat Chandra’s novel “Devdas”, is not only a novel; it has gone way beyond that. Devdas has now become an adjective; it has almost become a synonymous with love. His movie Dev D is completely a modern approach of the book. Kashyap also feels that the modern youths will identify themselves with “Dev”, modern Devdas. This venture is totally a commercial one.
The movie “Dev D” is made keeping in mind the Indian youths. The movie is a commercial venture. The shooting of the film has been done at lots of places like Manali, New Delhi, Chandigarh and London. Anurag kashyap is trying very hard to delete his image as an art-film-maker. The film is all set to release in February and Central Delhi has been the main shooting location.
One months waiting and we will see whether this new venture of Anurag Kashyap will attract the Indian youths or not. Lat us cross our fingers and wait for the movie to get released.
