Bollywood crime action drama, Gunga Jumna, directed by Nitin Bose and written by Dilip Kumar was released in the year 1961. The movie starred Dilip Kumar and Vyjayanthimala in lead roles while Nasir Khan, Ranjeet Sood, Anwar Hussain, Narbada Shankar, Kanhaiyalal, Azra, Praveen Paul and Leela Chitnis also played important characters in the film. The melodious music of the movie was directed by none other than the legendary music director Naushad while the songs were crooned by Mohammed Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Hemanata Mukherjee and Asha Bhonsle.

Gungaram ( Dilip Kumar ) and Jumnaran ( Nasir Khan ) are two brothers who are living a poor lifestyle alongwith their mother, Govindi ( Leela Chitnis ). Gungaram has no interest in studies while Jumnaram is quite studious. Though Gunga is not good at studies but he is very good at heart. He always tries to help his mother in her work. When his mother falls ill, he decides to takes the responsibilty of the household. He decides to work hard so that he can make his brother educated.

Govindi recovers from her illness and once again starts working. But problem arises when she is accused of stealing money from a house in which she works. She is arrested by police and because of the shame, Govindi kills herself. Gunga then sends Jumna to city for his higher education. Few years later, Jumna is now a police officer by profession and he is assigned his first assignment. He is asked to go in his village and arrests no other than his own brother, Gunga, who is now a bandit.
