Kishore Kumar or Abhas Kumar Ganguly was born in a Bengali family in the Khandwa town of Madhya Pradesh. He was the second youngest among the four brothers. He started his career in bollywood as a chorus singer at Bombay Talkies, where his elder bother Ashok Kumar was a star. Kishore Kumar has sung in several languages including Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Bhojpuri etc. He also holds the record of being the most no. of times winner of Filmfare Awards for Best Male Playback Singer category.

He actually started his career as an actor and his first film was Shikari. After that he did many movie like Andolan, Naukri, New Delhi, Chalti Ka Naa Gaadi, Half Ticket, Padosan etc. But he was never interested in becoming an actor. He was more interested in becoming a successful singer though. He got his first break as a singer in the movie Ziddi in which he sung the song ‘Marne ki duayein kyun mangoon’.

Music director S. D. Burman holds the credit of discovering Kishore Kumar’s talent as a singer. One day Burman visited Ashok Kumar’s house, where he heard Kishore Kumar singing the song of K L Sehgal. He was so impressed by his singing ability and asked him to develop his own style of singing. Later S. D. Burman recorded with Kishore in several films including Funtoosh, Nau Do Gyarah, Paying Guest, Guide, Jewel Thief, Prem Pujari. Two of his songs ‘Hum hain raahi pyar ke’ from Nau Do Gyarah and ‘Ek Ladki Bheegi Bhaagi Si‘ of Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi proved out be big hits of that time.

S. D. Burman’s son, Rahul Dev Burman also did films with Kishore Kumar. Padosan, which they did together proved out to be huge hit with the most popular song ‘Mere saamne waali khidki mein’ picturised on Kishore Da. Kishore Da sang for all leading actors including Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Dev Anand and Rishi Kapoor. R. D. Burman always considered Kishore Kumar his favorite singer and recorded several hit songs with him. Kishore Kumar also sang for Anil Kapoor in two or three films.
