Navratri is a nine day Hindu festival and in literal terms the word ‘ Navratri ‘ stands for nine nights in Sanskrit where nava stands for nine as well as Ratri meaning nights. In these nine days or night people worship nine forms of Goddess Durga. The dates of this festival are determined according to the lunar calendar. With the addidtion of one more day in these nine days it becomes Dasahara. The nine forms of Devi Durga worshipped during these nine days are Amba, Bhavani, Chandika, Bhadrakali, Annapurna, Bhairavi, Mookambika, Lalita and Sarvamangala. Garba dance is one of the usual things during these nine days or night.

People also observe a fast during these nine days. The real story associated with this Navratri festivel is that Goddess Durga killed the demon Mahishasura or Mahisha and symbolized the victory of good over evil. Navratri is divided into sets of three days to adore three different aspects of the supreme goddess or goddesses. The very next day of Navratri i.e. the tenth day is celebrated as the Dusahara which also symbolizes the voictory of good over evil as Lord Rama killed the demon Ravana on that day.
