The action family drama Abhimanyu was released on July 21, 1989 under the banner of Anu Arts. The movie was directed by Mahesh Bhatt and produced by Tito. The actors in the lead roles of the movie were Anil Kapoor, Anita Raaj, Poonam Dhillon and Kimi Katkar while the presence of Prem Chopra, Shakti Kapoor, Shafi Inamdaar, Aruna Irani and Jagdeep supported the film. The music of the film was directed by Anu Malik while the songs were sung by Amit Kumar, Alka Yagnik, Kumar Sanu, Sadhana Sargam, Shabbir Kumar and Anuradha Paudwal.

The action cum family drama Abhimanyu was a usual movie of its time and revolved mostly around Abhimanyu alias Manu ( Anil Kapoor ) who lived in small town of India with his father Shyam Lal ( A K Hangal ), mom, and unmarried sister, Tulsi ( Poonam Dhillon ). The twist in the story comes when a bad son of Ram Babu ( Prem Chopra ) and Parvati ( Aruna Irani ), named Pannalal ( Shakti Kapoor ) returns home. Pannalal was floored by Tulsi’s beauty and wanted to have her at any cost.

Pannalal’s passion about Tulsi, left her with no option but to commit suicide. She was on her way to commit suicide but was saved by Ram just in time. When Manu finds out that Pannalal is responsible for Tulsi’s state, he goes to Pannalal and requests him to marry her but he scolds and humiliates him back. Then Ram, Tulsi, Pyare ( Jagdeep ) who is their friend, and their U.S. returned wealthy industrialist friend, G.S. Parmeshwaran ( Shafi Inamdaar ) got together to hatch a plan against Pannalal.
