Yesteryear bollywood hit, Chitchor, written and directed by Basu Chatterjee was released in the year 1976. The movie starred Amol Palekar and Zarina Wahab in the lead roles while Vijayendra Ghatge and Master Raju also played important roles in the movie. The movie was released under the banner of Rajshri Productions. The superhit music of the film was given by Ravindra Jain and the songs were sung by K. J. Yesudas and Hemlata. The film became a box office hit and won a couple of awards too.

The movie starts with Geeta ( Zarina Wahab ), who lives with his parents in a small village Madhupur. Geeta’s father ( A. K. Hangal ) is informed by his elder daughter, Meera, who lives in Mumbai, about the arrival of a young engineer with whom she wants to matchmake Geeta. Vinod ( Amol Palekar ), the newcomer, recives a good welcome by the family. The family tries to create opportunities so that Geeta and Vinod could spend sometime with each other. Vinod starts teaching singing to Geeta and they both falls in love with each other. Everything is going good until the family recieves another letter from Meera.

Geeta’s father get shocked to read that the engineer, Sunil Kishen ( Vijayendra Ghatge ), whom Meera was sending to meet the family has not yet arrived. he is supposed to come soon. They come to know that Vinod is only an overseer of the site. Geeta’s father then asks her to stop meeting Vinod. But Geeta is unable to do so. Sunil, when meets Geeta become impressed by her simplicity and instantly agrees to the engagement. When Vinod hears about the engagement, he prepares to leave the village.
