English Babu Desi Mem was a romantic drama released on January 26, 1996. The movie was directed and produced by Pravin Nishchal. The lead roles were played by Shahrukh Khan, Sonali Bendre and Sunny Singh while other roles were played by Rajeshwari, Saeed Jaffery and Sudhir Dalvi. The music directors of the movie were Nikhil and Vinay. The lyrics were written by Yogesh and Rani Malik. The singers were Poornima, Kumar Sanu, Alka Yagnik, Asha Bhosle and Udit Narayan. The story writer was Ali Raza.

In the movie Shahrukh Khan played multiple roles. In the beginning of the movie Hari ( Shahrukh Khan ) leaves his home as his parents forced him to get married. His plane crashes and everyone believes he is dead. He survives and is looked after by a girl Katariya ( Rajeshwari ). Hari fells in love with her and they get married. Katariya gives birth to a boy named Nandu ( Sunny Singh ) and dies. Hari also dies in a mishap on Diwali.

Katariya’s younger sister Bijuriya ( Sonali Bendre ), takes care of Nandu. One day a lawyer Madadgar ( Saeed Jaffery ) views Vikram Mayur’s ( Shahrukh Khan) photograph in a magazine and decides to handover Nandu’s possession to him so that Nandu can be brought up nicely. Vikram comes to India but Bijuriya was against giving Nandu. Both Vikram and Bijuriya start liking each other. Nandu wants Bijuriya to get married first thus was not willing to go with his uncle. How will Vikram take Nandu with him?
