The romantic movie Lagaan was released on June 15, 2001 under the banner of Aamir Khan Productions. The movie was directed by Ashutosh Gowarikar and produced by Aamir Khan. The key roles in the movie were played by Aamir Khan, Rachel Shelly, Gracy Singh and Paul Blackthorne while Raghuveer Yadav and Daya Shanker Pandey were also there in the film. The music of the film was directed by A R Rahman and the songs were sung by Anuradha Sriram, Asha Bhosle, Lata Mangeshkar, Srinivas and Udit Narayan.

The movie Lagaan was Aamir’s home production, written and directed by Ashutosh Gowarikar who has earlier directed the movie “Baazi” that proved futile at the Box Office. The backdrop of the movie is the latter half of nineteenth century, the time when the innocent peasants of India were tortured by the Britishers. The movie is the story of a small village of Champaner in North India in 1890s where there lived a small group of farmers who were happy with their ploughing and sowing work.

The story revolves around Bhuvan ( Aamir Khan ), a young and dynamic farmer and Gauri ( Gracy Singh ). The adversities went to the next level when the British captain asked the villagers for a cricket match between them and the British community. He wanted to burden the villagers with the land tax called Lagaan. The captain thought that the villagers were not comfortable playing the game and is a good idea to ask them to compete for the match. They got ready, somehow, to compete for the match.
