Amitabh Bachchan and Karishma Kapoor starrer Mrityudaata, was released in the year 1997. The movie was written and directed by Mehul Kumar. The other starcast of the film includes Dimple Kapadia, Arbaaz Khan, Mukesh Rishsi, Paresh Rawal, Vikas Anand, Aashish Vidhyarthi and Avtar Gill in important roles. The melodious music of the movie was directed by the well known music director duo Anand-Milind and Sunil Kaushik in collaboration while the songs were rendered by Mohammed Aziz, Abhijeet, Vinod Rathod, Daler Mehndi, Sudesh Bhonsle and Alka Yagnik.

Dr. Ram Prasad Ghayal ( Amitabh Bachchan ) is a well known reputed surgeon. He is living a happy life alongwith his beautiful wife, Janaki ( Dimple Kapadia ) and his younger brother Bharat Prasad Ghayal ( Arbaaz Khan ). Bharat is in love with a beautiful girl named Renuuka Jain ( Karishma Kapoor ) and both are planning to get married soon. Raja Tonga ( Deepak Tijori ), brother of criminal don Rana Tonga ( Mukesh Rishi ) is also in love with Renuka and wants to marry her. However, she has made it clear to Raja that she loves Bharat only.

Bharat, who is an architect by profession, refuses to get involved in a project which includes a heavy displacement. In returnn he is framed in a wrong case of raping and killing a girl named Rajni. Bharat is sent to jail and because of this humiliation he commits suicide. Janki dies in the shock of this news. Renuka also get married to Raja. Devastated Ram takes alcohol in a big way.
