Bollywood romantic family drama, Phagun, directed by Rajinder Singh Bedi was released in the year 1973. The movie starred Dharmendra and Waheeda Rehman in lead roles while Om Prakash, Jaya Bhaduri, Sajjan, Vijay Arora, V. Gopal and Kavita also played important characters in the film. The melodious music of the movie was composed by the well known veteran music director Sachin Dev Burman while the songs were rendered by Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Usha Mangeshkar and Asha Bhonsle.

The movie starts with a guy named Gopal aka Gopu ( Dharmendra ), who is a writer by profession and is living a poor life. He meets with a beautiful girl named Shanta Dhamle ( Waheeda Rehman ) and instantly falls in love with her. Shanta too gets attracted towards his good nature and they decides to get marriedto each other. But the problem is that Shanta belongs to a wealthy family and her father, Shyam Rao Dhamle, does not want his daughter to get married with a poor guy. He tries to convince her not to get married with Gopal.

But Shanta refuse to hear his saying and finally get married with Gopal. Gopal then moves in with them only to hear the verbal abuse from Shyam Rao. On the occasion of Holi, Gopal puts up some colours on the expensive saree of Shanta because of which she humilates him. Gopal decides to walk out of the house. He then starts living with a new identity of Santosh. Shanta reveals about this and Gopal then once again changes his name to Vivek. Gopal is determined to prove himself in front of Shanta’s eyes.
