Guru Dutt and Mala Sinha starrer romantic musical drama, Pyaasa, was released on February 19, 1957. The movie was directed by Guru Dutt and written by Abrar Alvi. The other starcast of the movie includes Waheeda Rehman, Johnny Walker, Mehmood, Moni Chatterjee, Rehman, Maya Dass and Kumkum in important roles. The hit evergreen music of the movie was given by the well known veteran music director Sachin Dev Burman while the songs were beautifully sung by Mohammed Rafi, Hemanata Mukherjee and Geeta Dutt.

Vijay ( Guru Dutt ) is living a middleclass lifestyle alongwith his family in the city. His family consists of his mother and two brothers. Vijay is unemployed but his brothers wants him to get a job so that he can help them in running the household. However, Vijay is passionate about writing poems. Vijay tries to get his poems published but all his efforts goes in vain. He get frustated with this and takes to alcohol in a big way. He later get friendly with a prostitute named Gulabo ( Waheeda Rehman ).

He is then thrown out of the house by his brothers. Gulabo provides him shelter in her house. She also get his poems published. He becomes very happy with her efforts and decides to get married to her. But is that so easy to get married to a prostitute. What will happen next?
