The drama movie, Saraansh was released on May 25, 1984. Mahesh Bhatt directed while Tarachand Barjatya produced the movie. The star cast of the movie included Anupam Kher, Rohini Hattangadi, Madan Jain and Madan Jain while Soni Razdan, Suhas Bhalekar, Akash Khurana and Vijay Kashyap played the supporting roles. Asha Bhosle, Mohammad Rafi, Mukesh and Lata Mangeshkar sung the songs while Ajit verma was the music director. David Dhawan was the editor while Mahesh Bhatt did the screenplay and wrote the script for the movie.

B.V. Pradhan ( Anupam Kher ) , a retired teacher lives happily with his wife Parvati ( Rohini Hattangadi ) and his only son in Bombay. One day his happiness is shattered after hearing the news of his son’s death in an absurd mugger’s accident. After this, he and his wife decides to keep a paying guest, Sujata in order to compensate for the money as their son was the only one to earn in tha family and his own pension was too less.Sujata was a film actress and also had illicit relations with a young man , Vilas. Vilas was the son of a local town politician, Gajanan Chitre. Gajanan is against the marriage of his son and Sujata.

Due to some intimate relations of Sujata with Vilas, she gets pregnant. When both of them concern Gajanan about the matter, he not only refuses for the marriage but also threatens Sujata for her life if she does not abort the child as soon as possible. Pradhan supports Sujata and takes care of Sujata against Gajanan’s men going through all the harassment himself. He also tries complaining against Gajanan in the police but all his attempts fail as Gajanan was is great power and even police could not take any hard step against him. Sujata is unaware of the fact that Pradhan and his wife had a secret agenda in keeping her at their place.
