Bollywood movie, Sargam, directed by K Vishwanath was released on 8 January 1979. The movie starred Rishi Kapoor and Jaya Prada in lead roles while Shakti Kapoor, Aruna Irani, Asrani and Shashikala played supporting roles in the movie. The superhit music of the film was given by Laxmikant Pyarelal and the songs were sung by veteran singer Mohammed Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar. The movie was a remake of a Telugu hit Siri Siri Muvva which also starred Jayaprada in lead roles. The movie also made the bollywood debut of Jaya Prada. The movie became a huge hit and ruled the box office in 1979.

The movie starts with a beautiful girl, Hema ( Jaya Prada ), who is a dumb living with her cruel stepmother ( Shashikala ). Her stepmother is very rude to her and treats her like a slave. Hema is an extremely talented dancer but she cannot express her fondness of dancing as she is dumb. In the same village there is a ‘dafliwala’, Raju ( Rishi Kapoor ), who is an orphan and usually fulfills his needs through the money given by people after hearing his melodious dafli. Raju befriends Hema and encourages her to dance.

Hema starts dancing to the Raju’s dafli rhythm. Both of them starts developing feeling for each other and ends up falling in love. But when Hema’s aunt discovers this relationship, she forcefully tries to marry her off to a bad guy ( Shakti Kapoor ), who is already married and killed his wife. Raju saves her from that unwanted marriage and both of them run away to a different place. There Hema expresses her love for Raju. But she get shocked when Raju declines her love. Hema reveals that Raju is having TB. But in the end Raju get cured from the disease and marries Hema.
