Shama was a romantic drama released on November 13, 1981. The movie was directed by Naeem Basit. The main roles in the movie were played by Girish Karnad, Aruna Irani, Shabana Azmi and Kulbhushan Kharbanda while the presence of Kader Khan, Sudha Chopra, Jagdeep, Goga Kapoor, Satyendra Kapoor, Amjad Khan and Raju Shreshta supported the film. The music of the film was directed by Usha Khanna while the songs were sung by Lata Mangeshkar.

Shama was a romantic film that revolved mostly around a man and a widower named Nawab Yusuf Khan ( Girish Karnad ) who lived a wealthy and comfortable life with his son in Sultanpur, India. The era was ruled by the British and in that era his son Shahnawaz ( Raju Shrestha ) used to go to school with his college-going brother, Aslam. One day Yusuf came to know that his brother Aslam has fallen in bad company and is frequently visiting a courtesan named Pheroza ( Aruna Irani ).

Yusuf gets his brother to return home and arranges for his wedding with a belle named Shama ( Shabana Azmi ) who is the only daughter of Maulvi Karrimudin ( Satyendra Kapoor ). The movie takes a turn when on the day of his marriage, he escapes and marries secretly to Pheroza. This came as a shock to Karrimudin who passes away leaving his wife and daughter Shama behind struggling to find their living. Aslam returns home along with Pheroza, her mom, Nadira, maternal uncle, Dilawar, and a servant, Lathan.
