Sohni Mahiwal was an adventurous romantic drama movie with a touch of action. It was released on June 29, 1984 under the banner of Eagle Films. F C Mehra produced while Umesh Mehra directed the movie. The lead cast of the movie included Sunny Deol, Poonam Dhillon, Zeenat Aman and Shammi Kapoor while Tanuja, Pran and Gulshan Grover played the supporting roles. Asha Bhosle and Shabbir Kumar sang the songs for the movie while Anu Malik directed the music.

Shahjada Ijjat Beg ( Sunny Deol ) the rich trader from Bukhara ( Uzbekistan ), visits India for his trading business and settles in Gujarat. He falls in love with a charming young girl names Sohni ( Poonam Dhillon ).Sohni resided with his father Tulla ( Pran ), who was a potter and her mother ( Tanuja ).Instead of concentrating on the business , Ijjat Beg took up a job as a servant at Tulla’s place , so that both of them could meet up easily. Soon, he came to be known as ‘Mahiwal’.

When Tulla heard about the rumors of Sohni and Mahiwal, without Sohni’s approval, he arranged her marriage with another potter. Sohni was helpless as she was informed about the wedding on that particular day. Mahiwal abandoned the world and started living like a hermit in a small hut across the river at the beginning of Sohni’s land.Sohni used to meet up Mahiwal regularly even after her marriage. One day while swimming across the river to meet him, she drowned and when Mahiwal saw this, he as well jumped into the water.
