Bollywood musical romantic drama, Souten, directed by Saawan Kumar Tak and written by Kamleshwar was released on February 5, 1983. The movie starred Rajesh Khanna, Tina Munim and Padmini Kolhapure in lead roles while Prem Chopra, Pran, Roopesh Kumar, Vijay Arora, Shreeram Lagoo, Shashikala and Satyendra kapoor also played significant characters in the film. The hit melodious music of the movie was composed by the female music director Usha Khanna while the songs were rendered by Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Anuradha Paudwal and Asha Bhonsle.

The movie starts with a young and very ambitious guy named Shyam Mohit ( Rajesh Khanna ), who is living in Mauritious. He meets with a girl rich named Rukmani ( Tina Munim ) and instantly falls in love with her. They both then decides to get married but is strongly opposed by Rukmnani’s mother and brother. However, Shyam and Rukmani get married with each other. Their life goes smooth until Rukmani undergoes an operation to stop any pregnancy. Shyam get shocked to learn this news as he was planning to be father. He gets angry on Rukmani, who is leats interested in becoming a mother.

This one things creates conflicts between them. Though they still lives together under one roof but they always tries to keep distance from each other. Situation gets even worse when Rukmani suspects Shyam of having an extramrital affair with a girl named Radha ( Padmini Kolhapure ), who is a librarian. Rukmani’s mother and brother also tries to create differences between Shyam and Rukmani as they wants to inherit Rukmani’s wealth.
