Umrao Jaan was a family movie released in the year of 1981. The movie was directed as well as produced by Muzaffar Ali. The major roles in the movie were played by Rekha, Naseruddin Shah, Farooq Sheikh and Raj Babbar while the roles of Prema Narayan, Dina Pathak, Leela Mishra, Akbar Rashid and Shaukat Kaifi were equally important. The music of the film was directed by Khayyam while the songs were sung by Asha Bhosle and Mohammad Aziz.

Umrao Jaan was a hit movie of its time that was liked by many people. The movie showcased the British India in the region of Faizabad. The movie starts when one day Amiran’s father testify against Daroga Dilawar who is then jailed and thus sentenced the imprisonment. He was jailed where he worked like all other prisoners. The day he was released, he decided to take his revenge from Amiran ( Rekha ) and thus abducts her to sell her at a brothel. Amiran was renamed here to be Umrao Jaan.

Umrao has matured up with time and is a great poet and dancer who entertain everyone at the brothel. She was liked by many people and the person who liked her most was Nawab Sultan ( Farooq Sheikh ) and his father. Nawab had developed a liking for Umrao and thus wanted to marry her but the movie takes a turn when one day his mother forced him to marry some girl of her choice. This left Umrao heart broken and sad. Umrao then develops affection with Faiz Ali ( Raj Babbar ) with whom she finally escapes away.
