The romantic drama movie, Utsav was released on 23 August 1984. Shashi Kapoor was the producer while Girish Karnad directed the movie. The star cast of the movie involved Rekha, Shashi Kapoor and Shekhar Suman while Amjad Khan, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Kunal Kapoor, Anuradha Patel and Anupam Kher played the supporting roles. Asha Bhosle, Lata Mangeshkar and Suresh Wadkar sang the songs for the movie while Laxmikant Pyarelal gave the music.

Utsav is based on the Sanskrit play “The Golden Toy Chariot” by the famous Indian playwright Bhasa of 6th century A.D. Vasantasena ( Rekha ) is a courtesan who entertains at the King Palaka’s court. King Palaka’s brother-in-law, Sansthanak ( Shashi Kapoor ) wanted to take advantage of Vasantasena. One day, while running away from him, Vasantasena unintentionally hides in Charudatta’s house. Charudatta ( Shekhar Suman ) is a struggling artist who is married to Aditi ( Anuradha Patel ).

Inspite of being a married, Charudatta is attracted towards Vasantasena and both of them fall in love with each other. After eloping from the prison, Sansthanak begins to search for Vasantasena. Sansthanak strangulates Vasantasena when she his proposal and leaves her dead. When Charudatta finds his lifeless love, he is arrested for her murder. Charudatta is sentenced to be hanged in court, accused of a murder he claims he did not commit.
