Indian films strengthening the deteriorating India-Pak relations

Ghajini”, the Aamir Khan Starrer bollywood blockbuster is not only a hit in India but it is also doing equally well in the neighboring country, Pakistan.

A film freak Pakistani was quoted, as “I liked this movie not because it was an Indian film but because we do not make such quality films here”. It is to be noted that Indian films were not screened in Pakistan just a year ago.  In Pakistan there had been a ban on Indian films for more then 40 years. And now as the ban has been lifted, the Pakistani cinema ha experienced a great boost, according to the newspaper Dawn. But the recent Indian threat to dissolve all the cross-border business as a reply to the recent terror attacks on Mumbai would prove out to be a bolt from the blue for the Pakistani cinema industry. Everyone related to the Pakistani film business is worried about the tension between the two nations. They are looking eagerly towards every step taken by both the countries.

Though Indian films were banned in Pakistan but Pakistani markets have always been flooded with pirated DVD’s and videos of bollywood movies. But to the Pakistani filmmakers Indian films are not at all harmful for their industry.

Pakistani filmmakers think that Indian films cannot annihilate the Pakistani film business. In fact they would encourage making of some good stuff there in Pakistan. Pakistan has a strict censorship policy which somewhat hinders the production of movies with sensitive themes. The really tough competition from Indian films would help to change the situation.

But according to a source from the Pakistani cultural ministry, Pakistan has no plans to reimpose the ban on the Indian films. This could elevate the tensions and would obstruct to bring stability in the region. This is certainly something, which the Pakistani leaders would not want.
