Lata Ji speaks about her rift with Burman and Rafi

Lata Mangeshkar just turned eighty and like all of her earlier birthdays, she was not there in the spotlight rather into a hiding. She has had a perfect career and she says that if she were given a chance to change anything she would rather leave it as it is and not changes anything. In a career spanning decades it makes her proud to say that never did she had a bad patch. She has a strong belief that the reason for her creation was to sing.

Starting out at the age of five and then supporting the entire family through her voice after her father passed away was tough but she never complains. She was happy with what she was doing and at that times when girls working was considered a taboo she never faced any such problems. In an interview recently, she recalled what exactly had happened between her and Rafi during their infamous spat.

It was during a meeting that was called to talk about the royalty to singers so that they can earn after they stop singing. Rafi was not happy with the points she made and said that she will not sing with her. She replied back saying that she will make it easy for him and she personally called up people saying that she would not sing with him. The fight ended when Shankar Jaikishan asked them to start singing duets together as their melodies were getting affected.

It was only after Rafi gave it in writing that she started work with him again. The rift with S.D.Burman was due to miscommunication as a person wrongly informed Burman dada that she had refused to re record a song. Burman worked with Asha Bhonsle for some time after that before they came back together.
