Maine Pyar Kiya, directed by Sooraj R. Barjatya, was released on December 29, 1989. The movie starred Salman Khan and Bhagyashri in the lead roles while Alok Nath and Laxmikant Berde also played significant rols in the movie. The superhit music of the film was given by Ram-Laxman. The success of the movie established Salman as the top most hero of bollywood.

The story of the movie belongs to two friends, Karan ( Alok Nath ) and Kishan ( Rajeev Verma ). Karan is a poor mechanic residing in a small village while Kishan is a rich man living the lavish life in a city. However, Karan’s sacrifice is the main reason for Kishen’s success. The real story starts when Karan goes abroad and leaves her daughter, Suman ( Bhagyashree ), at Kishen’s residence. Suman is befriended by Kishan’s son Prem ( Salman Khan ) and Manohar ( Laxmikant Berde ).

After a bad incident at a party, Prem realizes that he has fallen in love with Suman. Prem’s mother ( Reema Lagoo ) also likes Suman and wants her to be her daughter-in-law. Prem finally managed to convince Suman that he really loves her from deep of his heart. But when Kishen came to know about this, he simply balked the romance of Prem and Suman giving the reason that he does not want his son to marry a poor girl. Suddenly Karan returns from overseas and on hearing such bad words for her dauhter starts quarelling with Kishen. He then returns to his village with Suman.

Being a true lover, Prem refuses to accept his father decision and goes to Suman’s village. He begs Karan to allow him to marry Suman. Karan gives one condition to Prem for marrying Suman. He wants Prem to prove that he can earn the sufficient money on his own for living a good life with Suman.
