Movie review of Ram Gopal Verma ki AAG

AAG, remake of SHOLAY, one of the most awaited movies of this year. Sure, the story is the same but the treatment of the movie is all Ram Gopal Verma style. Sholay is a evergreen movie and it takes a lot of courage for a director to remake this movie. Ram Gopal Varma took up the challenge but fails to deliver with it. He has done a blunder by remaking SHOLAY.

In RGV’s AAG location has changed from Ramgadh to Kaliganj. The chemistry and friendship shared between Jay and Veeru in the original is unavailable between Heero and Raj. The emotions, drama and thrill is missing in RGV’s AAG. And the scene that was one of the best scene of SHOLAY, the suicide scene, is truely a disappointing one here. Ajay devgan tried his best to do justice with this scene but fails to touch the heart of audience. To be more specific, the famous ’suicide’ sequence doesn’t work at all.

There is no creativity at all by Ramu in this AAG. None of the single character is fleshed out. Nisha Kothari( Ghoongroo instead of Basanti) seems to be plainly regurgitating her utterly uninteresting dialogues. She is in the film just for adding some glamour. She looks fully emotionless at the time of her dialogue delivery.

It’s not the case with Nisha Kothari only, infact most of the characters are dull and plain in the whole movie. Even Amitabh Bachchan fails to create any type of terror in the role of Babban. His dirty look, his bluish green eyes simply fails to do the trick for his role. Amitabh Bachchan fails to do justice with the role of psychotic gangster.

The only person who showed some interest in playing his role decently is Ajay Devgan aka Heero. Ajay Devgan in the role of ‘Heero’ simply rocks the screen right from his entry. But Prasanth Raj as Raj( Jay in original movie) is totally expressionless throughout the movie.

While Sholay had all the qualities of a blockbuster movie such that detailed characters played by superb actors, catching dialogues, brilliant sense of humor, good music which suits with the running movie etc. But Ramu’s AAG is just opposite to that i.e. dull dialogue, no sense of humour at all and ridiculous music (except that Mehbooba-Mehbooba song featuring Urmila).

It would be better for you to control your urge to compare this AAG with SHOLAY, and just enjoy the remake. Overall, Ram Gopal Varma Ki AAG is a below average product and almost unbearable. It would be better to watch this movie on DVD rather than seeing it in Cinema hall.
