The movie Aaj Ka M.L.A Ram Avtar was a simple drama released on March 2, 1984. The movie was produced by T Kranthi Kumar and the director of the movie was Dasari Narayana Rao. The lead roles in the movie were played by Rajesh Khanna, Shabhana Azmi, Satyen Kappu and Om Shiv Puri. Other good roles were played by Madan Puri, Devan Puri, Asrani and A K Hangal. The music of the movie was given by Bappi Lahiri while the singers were Kishore Kumar and Bappi Lahiri. The lyrics were written by Indevaar.

The story is about simple village man Ram Avtar ( Rajesh Khanna ) who worked as a barber, cutting the villagers hair to earn for himself and his family. His wife died and Sushma ( Shabana Azmi ), his wife sister used to look after him and his children. Among the villagers whom Ram Avtar served was Minister Digvijay Singh ( Satyen Kappu ). Digvijay was really impressed by Ram’s dedication toward his work and his family. Moreover his joyful nature pleased everyone. Digvijay’s party wanted someone to compete in the election from their side.

Digvijay selected Ram Avtar for this and Ram welcomed this opportunity. Ram’s simplicity and truthfulness helped him and when the results were declared he was a clear winner. Now he was a minister and this fame brought a change to him and his lifestyle. He was now becoming cunning and rude to cope with the political atmosphere. He had no time for his family and money is what was important for him. Sushma was surprised by what fame and power can do a man. Will this all affect Ram’s children and Sushma?
