Yesteryear hit movie, Amanush, directed by Shakti Samanta was released on March 21, 1975. the movie starred Uttam Kumar and Sharmila Tagore in the lead roles while Utpall Dutt, Prema Narayan, Ani Chatterjee and Asit Sen also played important characters in the movie. the melodious hit music of the film was given by Shyamal Mitra while the songs were rendered by Kishore Kumar, Manohari Singh, Asha Bhonsle etc. the movie did well at the box office. However, this was the only hit film of Uttam Kumar in the span of his short acting career.

The movie belongs to Madhusudan Roy Chaudhary aka Madhu ( Uttam Kumar ), who was a wealthy person of his village but now living a poor lifestyle. Madhu was confronted by a women named Champa who announced that Madhu made his pregnant. And when Madhu went to her home to ask about spreading this baseless rumours, he finds her dead in her home. Police arrested Madhu and is sentenced to jail for several years. When Madhu returned from the Jail, he found everything taken over by his uncle’s munim Ghosal.

Madhu was in love with Dr. Anand’s beautiful sister, Rekha ( Sharmila Tagore ). But when Champa spread that rumour, Rekha confronts Madhu. Madhu tried to tell her truth but all his effortes went in vain. Now Madhu is an alocholic and lives a poor lifestyle in the village. That girl Champa is also missing. Rekha still hates him and tries to keep a distance from him. Now everyone in the village hates him and this keeps him angry all the time. He misbehaves with all person and tries to live separate from the villagers. But for how long he will live like this?
