The family drama Amrit was released on June 27, 1986. The movie was directed as well as produced by Mohan Kumar. The major roles in the movie were played by Rajesh Khanna, Aruna Irani, Smita Patil and Sujit Kumar while the supporting roles were played by Zarina Wahab, Rajesh Puri, Anita Kanwar, Baby Guddo, Shafi Inamdaar and Satish Shah. The music of the film was directed by Laxmikant Kudalkar and Pyarelal while the songs were sung by Mohammad Aziz, Mahendra Kapoor, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Anuradha Paudwal and Manhar Udhas.

The movie Amrit which is more of a family drama revolves mostly around a widow named Kamla Srivastav ( Smita Patil ) living in a big bungalow called “Kamla Nivas” of course named after her. The name of the house was given by her late husband named Shrikant ( Shashi Puri ). She lived in her bungalow with her small family consisting of son named Virendra ( Rishabh Shukla ), his wife named Rekha ( Anita Kanwar ) and their daughter named Sunita ( Pallavi Joshi ).

All the household work was done by Kamla only which includes cleaning, cooking, washing clothes as well as performing outdoor activities. She was the person who does all the major work and in spite of this quality she was always ignored by her son as well as his daughter-in-law. Her only hope in her life was Sunita whom she loved a lot. There was another widower named Amrit Lal Sharma ( Rajesh Khanna ) who lived in a near by bungalow. His wife Savitri ( Zarina Wahab ) died when a truck ran over her.
