The historical war movie Asoka was released on October 26, 2001 under the banner of Arclightz & Films. The movie was directed by Santosh Sivan and produced by Juhi Chawla. The lead roles in the movie were played by Kareena Kapoor, Hrishita Bhatt, Shahrukh Khan and Danny Denzongpa while the supporting roles were played by Rahul Dev and Ajith Kumar. Music of the film was given by Sandeep Chowta and the songs were sung by Sunidhi Chauhan, Sunita Rao, Chitra, Abhijeet, Shaan and Hema Sardesai.

The movie Asoka was the life story of India’s historic warrior Asoka. The movie displays the transformation of a young and beloved son to an obsessive and merciless warrior. He was the conquerer, for whom his destiny was greater than that of the emperor. It is the story of Prince Asoka ( Shahrukh Khan ) who lived in the kingdom of Magadha. He was a so great warrior that even after 2500 years after his death, Asoka the Great, still lives on in our memories.

Asoka also believed in peace and non-violence, religion and love in place of hatred and war. Asoka in this film plays the life of the Emperor Asoka, grandson of Chandragupta Maurya, who was crowned the ruler of the throne of Magadha in 3rd century. To gain more empire he attacked the neighbor kingdom of Kalinga and got the hold of it after leaving it devastated. He also dedicated his life to spreading the light of Buddhism across the world.
