Atithee was a romantic family drama released on July 27, 1978. The movie was directed by Arvind Sen and produced by Anita Sen. The main roles in the movie were played by Shashi Kapoor, Shatrughan Sinha, Shabana and Vidya Sinha while the presence of Utpal Dutt, Mac Mohan, Deven Verma and Bharat Bhushan supported the film. The music of the film was directed by Kalayanji and Anandji while the songs were sung by Kishore Kumar, Anuradha Paudwal, Kanchan and Mahendra Kapoor.

Atithee was a romantic cum family flick that revolved mostly around a man named Navendhu Kumar ( Shatrughan Sinha ) who comes from a poor family consisting of his father Mohan who is handicapped, his housewife mother, two unmarried sisters Leela ( Shabana Azmi ) and Rajni ( Gayatri ), a younger brother Kundan ( Mehmood Jr ), and Meena ( Vidya Sinha ) who is his love. He was required to work to earn his living and started working for Avinash Gupta.

Everything was fine for Navendhu unless the differences between them started coming up. Thus he was framed for breaking in by Avinash Gupta ( Utpal Dutt ) falsely. Navendhu was arrested by the police and tried in court where he was given 12 months imprisonment. His family was on the brink of starving and was constantly exploited by Avinash. The movie takes a turn with the entry of Anand ( Shashi Kapoor ) in the movie who claims that he was sent by Navendhu.
