Bollywood family drama movie, Avtaar, directed by Mohan Kumar was released on Mrach 11, 1983. The movie starred Rajesh Khanna and Shabana Azmi in lead roles while Sachin, A. K. Hangal, Gulshan Grover and Rajni Sharma also played significant charcaters in the film. The hit music of the film was given by music director duo Laxmikant Pyarelal while the songs were sung by Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Mahendra Kapoor and Asha Bhonsle. The movie was a huge box office hit of the year.

The movie starts with Avtaar Kishen ( Rajesh Khanna ), who is a poor motor mechanic by profession. He is married to Radha ( Shabana Azmi ) and they have two sons, Ramesh ( Shashi Puri ) and Chandar ( Gulshan Grover ). Avtaar has provided high education to both of his sons. One day Avtaar gets injured while working in the factory and becomes crippled. Ramesh is working in a bank now and is married to Sudha. Chandar is also in love with the daughter of a wealthy businessman named Seth Laxminarayan.

Ramesh and Chandar shows their true colours when Avtaar and Radha wish to go on pilgrimage and therefore ask them to book tickets for them. But they get shocked when both Ramesh and Chandar refuses to book their tickets telling that they have no money. Things become even more worse when Sudha blames them for stealing money from her room. This angers Avtaar and he moves out of the house alongwith his wife and servant, Sevak ( Sachin ). But theproblem for him is that how will he manage to make a living once again from the starts in this old age?
