Awaargi was a social drama released on January 26, 1990. The movie was directed by Mahesh Bhatt and produced by P Raghunathan. The key roles in the movie were played by Anil Kapoor, Govinda, Meenakshi Seshadri and Avtar Gill while the roles of Anupam Kher, Paresh Rawal and Satish Kaushik, Pradeep Rawat were also important. The music of the film was directed by Anu Malik and the songs were sung by Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammad Aziz, Ghulam Ali, Anuradha Paudwal and Asha Bhosle.

The movie Awaargi is a romantic social movie that featured Anil Kapoor and Govinda in the lead roles and revolves around the dangerous gangster Lala Jamal Khan ( Anupam Kher ) of the Bombay city. He has several people working under him as his henchmen. One of his favorite and trusty men is Azad ( Anil Kapoor ) who has come very useful to him. He has always scared the people and has never failed. The twist in the story comes when he comes across a prostitute named Seema ( Meenakshi Seshadri ).

Seema is a prostitute working under the pimp Ranubhai ( Avtar Gill ) who owes allegiance to rival don, Bhau ( Paresh Rawal ). Azad refuses to submit her to anyone and rescues her from a brothel against the orders of both his boss and a rival gang leader. He also helps her to meet her aim of becoming a famous singer. He introduces her to a music director named Dhiren ( Govinda ). Seema became popular gradually and Azad has fallen for her. The twist comes when Dhiren also started loving her.
