Bollywood movie, Banarasi Babu, directed by Shankar Mukherjee was released in the year 1973. The movie starred Dev Anand and Rakhee Gulzar in lead roles while Yogeeta Bali, I. S. Johar, Jeevan, Veena, Bhagwan, Manorama, Bhushan Tiwari and Shivraj also played important roles in the film. The superhit music of the movie was given by veteran music director duo Kalyanji-Anandji while the songs were rendered by Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle, Lata Mangeshkar etc. The movie managed to do well at the box office window.

The movie starts with a wealthy businessman, Sohanlal ( Dev Anand ) who meets witha beautiful girl named Neela ( Rakhee Gulzar ) and falls in love with her. He tries to woo her and get succeed in it. He proposes her and she agrees to his proposal. Soon they bothe get married to each other. Sohan’s manager, V. K. Saxena ( Jeevan ) ask him to leave to London for some business work. After three months, Sohan returns from his business trip but get shocked with Neela’s absence on the airport. While returning to home in his car, Soham is kidnapped by some goons.

Sohan somehows manage to escape from the goons custody. But in the process of running away from the goons, he meets with an accident and get hospitilzed. There he meets with a women who pretends to be her mother. He then also meets with a women named Gulabiya ( Yogeeta Bali ), who tells him that she is her sweetheart. He returns to his home and found that he has been declared dead and Neela is about to inherit a huge sum of Rs. 70 Lakhs from her uncle. Sohan is confused about what actually is going on in his life these days?
