Bandit Queen was an offbeat movie dealing with the life of Phoolan Devi. The movie was released on 25 January 1996.The movie was produced by Bobby Bedi and Sandeep Singh Bedi. Shekhar Kapoor directed the movie. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan gave the music for the movie. Seema Biswas played the main role of Phoolan Devi. The movie also starred Shekhar Kapoor, Nirmal Pandey, Ajay Rohilla, Jeetendra Shastri, Aditya Srivastav, Anupam Shyam, Rajesh Vivek and Saurabh Shukla in supporting roles. Ranjit Kapoor wrote the dialogues.
In the opening scene, the film shows an eleven old year Phoolan ( Seema Biswas ) married to a twenty-year-old Puttilal ( Aditya Srivastav ). Initially her father hesitated to the marriage Phoolan but later agreed. Puttilal abuses Phoolan and assaults her physically. Unable to bear she runs away and goes home. Some year later, the panchayat banishes her from the village. She leaves the village with her cousin Kailash ( Saurabh Shukla ).she asks the police to help her go back to the village but they also beat her, molest her and put her in jail.

She is abducted from the jail by a bandit Babu Gujjar who beats her up and rapes her. One day while raping her, his accomplice named Vikram shoots him in the head. Vikram become the leader of the gang and a relationship develops between him and Phoolan. She then has her revenge with Puttilal. Meanwhile the real leader of the gang is released from jail and he comes back and gets Vikram killed. All the members of gang then rape Phoolan. Later she forms a gang with the help of an old friend and comes to be known as Phoolan Devi or Bandit Queen. The end scene shows that she took revenge from all the people and was captured in 1933 and released in 1934.
