The social drama Black was released on February 4, 2005 under the banner of Applause Entertainment. The movie was directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and produced by Anshuman Swami. The important roles in the film were played by Amitabh Bachchan, Shernaz Patel, Rani Mukherjee and Vijay Crishna while the roles of Dhritiman Chatterjee and Ayesha Kapur were also important. Music of the film was directed by Mychael Danna.

The famous director Sanjay Leela Bhansali produced the most insightful movie Black that changed the view of Bollywood towards film making. He also has several hits below his belt like Devdas and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. The story of the movie Black revolves around the deaf and blind character. Michelle McNally ( Rani Mukerji ) is deaf and blind due to the illness that caught her at the age of eighteen months. She is a bright and intelligent girl born to an Anglo-Indian family and lives in world of silence and isolation.

Michelle wanted to communicate with the external world and thus grows violent after long frustration. Her destiny meets a 48 year old, an alcoholic and a teacher to deaf and blind people Debraj Sahai ( Amitabh Bachchan ). He left his job at some school because of his drinking habit and dying eyesight. A common friend asks him to teach Michelle. He plans a different method to teach Michelle which was to be rude with her at the same time being tender. The ordinary methods will not apply as she is not an ordinary child. He dreams of making her living her normal life someday.
