Daata was a family drama released on June 30, 1989 under the banner of Sultaan Productions. The movie was directed as well as produced by Sultan Ahmed. The main roles in the movie were played by Mithun Chakraborty, Prem Chopra, Padmini Kolhapure and Shammi Kapoor while Ranjeet, Saeed Jaffrey, Jamuna, Deepak Parashar, Amrish Puri and Shoma Anand were also there in the film. The music of the film was directed by Kalyanji Veerji and Anandji while the songs were sung by Kishore Kumar, Sapna Mukherjee, Mahendra Kapoor, Alka Yagnik, Manhar Udhas, Sadhana Sargam, Asha Bhosle and Nalin Dave.

The social and family drama movie Daata revolved mostly around Dinanath ( Saeed Jaffrey ) who is a school teacher living in a small town in India with his wife Kamla, daughter Shanti ( Pallavi Joshi ) and son Kundan ( Mithun Chakraborty ). Dinanath has published a book recently titled “Daata” that referenced all the religions of the world and for this contribution of his; he was to be honored by none other than the President of India through Education Minister, Raja Suraj Singh ( Om Shivpuri ).

Dinanath also arranges the marriage of his daughter Shanti to the son of Gopaldas. But the problem he faced with this was that he demanded huge amount of money as dowry which he was unable to give and states that he has given sufficient gold and jewelry to Shanti. The twist in the story comes when the gold turns out to be impure. After this incident, Shanti kills herself and Dinanath dies of a heart attack. Kundan decides to avenge his father’s death by killing Gopaldas’ son, as a result he becomes a bandit.
