The movie Don Muthuswami was released on May 23, 2008 under the banner of Samanta Movies Pvt Ltd. The movie belongs to the genre of comedy and was directed by Ashim Samanta. The movie was produced by Shakti Samanta and the star casts of the movie are Hrishita Bhatt, Shakti Kapoor, Mithun Chakraborty, Rohit Roy, Ali Asgar, Yusuf Hussain, Dolly Minhas, Rakesh Bedi, Meghna Malik, Sonia Kapoor, Viju Khote, Ashwin Kaushal, Achyut Potdar, Upasna Singh, Ali Razak, Mohit Raina, Vishal Kotian, Aroon Bakshi and Anusmriti Sarkar. The music of the film is directed by Anu Malik.

The movie is directed by a debutant director Ashim Samanta, son of the late Shakti Samanta and tries upto his full potential to relive the magic created by his father. The actor in the lead role is Mithun who had made a comeback after producing ‘Jimmy’. The movie is a comic one and the performance of Mithun stands a class above the rest actors. The story of the movie revolves around period of 1970’s when Bombay was ruled by gangsters and smugglers and amongst them was Don Muthuswami ( Mithun Chakraborty ). Muthu’s father was in his last days and asked his son to see him. Muthu comes to pay tribute to his father.

Muthu’s father slaps him saying that Muthu had made them ashamed by being a gangster and thus he will have to die as an unhappu man. Muthu asks his father what he could do to bring peace into his mind. His father asks him to give a promise that he will turn into a gentleman, with which begins the humorous series of events of a gangster turning into a gentleman. Muthu transforms his gang members into domestic helps and hires an Urdu/Hindi teacher Jaikishan ( Mohit Raina ) so that he can improve upon his communication skills. This begins the journey of him getting change to Sir Muthuswami. Another confusion adds when his daughter Sanjana ( Hrishita Bhatt ) refuses to get marry to his friend Don Vardhan’s son Pradhan. She falsely tells him that she is pregnant.
