Bollywood movie, Ek Duje Ke Liye, written and directed by K. Balachander was released on June 5, 1981. The movie starred Kamal Haasan and Rati Agnihotri in lead roles while Rakesh Bedi, Shuba Khote and Madhavi also played important roles in it. The superhit music of the film was givne by the famous duo Laxmikant Pyarelal and the songs were sung by Lata Mangeshkar, S.P.Balasubrahmanyam, Anuradha and Anup Jalota. The movie is the remake of a Telugu movie Maro Charitra. The film did well at the box office and became the blockbuster movie of that year.

The movie starts with a Tamil guy, Vasu ( Kamal Haasan ) and a North-Indian girl, Sapna ( Rati Agnihotri ). They are neighbours but hardly speaks to each other because of their inability to speak each other language. As their family belongs to totally different religions, they usually quarrel with each other for various reasons. In these difficult circumstances, Vasu and Sapna falls in love with each other. When their families come to learn about this, they simply ask them to forget about each other. But after seeing Vasu and Sapna affection for each other, they imposes a condition for the two that if Vasu and Sapna will be able to pass out a year by staying from each other then they can get married.

Vasu and Sapna agree to the condition and decide to separate. Vasu moves to Hyderabad and there he meets Sandhya ( Madhavi ), who is a widow. Sandhya teaches him Hindi. On the otherhand, a guy named Chakram ( Rakesh Bedi ) visits Goa and proposes to Sapna. But Sapna rejects his proposal. Vasu then returns to Goa and tries to impress Sapna’s parents with his Hindi skills. But Sapna’s brother ( Raza Murad ) has some other plans for them. He sends some people to kill Vasu. Meanwhile, Sapna gets raped at a temple. In the end, both the lovers decides to commit suicide and jump off from a cliff.
