Songs of Giddh


The movie Giddh was a social drama released in 1984. The movie was produced and directed by T S Ranga. The lead roles in the movie were played by Om Puri, Nana Patekar, Smita Patil and Savita Bajaj. Other nice supporting roles were played by Vijay Kashyap, M K Raina and Achyut Potdar. The music of the movie was directed by B V Karanth while the songs were sung by Illa Arun. The lyrics were written by Vasant Dev. The story presents the role of superstition in the lives of a rural and illiterate people.

The story opens with a poor couple Bhasya ( Om Puri ) and Ahnami ( Smita Patil ). Bhasya is a manual worker, a drunkard and gets very low wages; hence he is unable to fulfill the needs of his family. Sometimes he is unable to earn any money and gets frustrated. As a result he beats his wife. The couple is living in a small town where girls are considered inferior; no importance is given to girls. Due to some superstition the girls are not made to get married rather they are forced to be prostitutes.

The villagers are afraid and are always quite because they fear that if they tried to oppose the custom they can get harms due to the superstition. The girls in the town are forced to lead this kind of life and the only way to escape is to run away to Bombay through a bus. A man named Veerapan tries to attract the run away girls and promises for a better future. Actually he sells these girls in Bombay. There is no way out for these girls. Their lives are spoiled as the people related to the racket are also corrupted. Will the couple be able to change the things for the village?
