Ijaazat was a romantic and family drama that was released in the year of 1988. The movie was directed by Gulzar and produced by R K Gupta and Rajinder Singh Bedi. The major roles in the movie were played by Naseruddin Shah, Anuradha Patel, Rekha and Ram Mohan while there were special appearances by Shammi Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor. Sulbha Deshpande and Dina Pathak were also there in the film. The music of the film was directed by R D Burman while the songs were sung by Asha Bhosle.

It is bit difficult to find the genre of the movie Ijaazat through its title but the movie was a romantic film that also showcased the element of family drama. The story of the movie revolves mostly around Mahinder ( Naseruddin Shah ) who is in love with Maya ( Anuradha Patel ) and would like to marry her one day. But the twist in the story was that Maya is a woman of the 20th century and does not believe in marriage, but would like to continue having a relationship with Mahinder.

Though Mahinder loved Maya, but he was also pressurized by his family who wanted him to marry her soon. Mahinder gives up and marries another woman named Sudha ( Rekha ). But their marriage was followed by separation as Mahinder was not able to forget Maya and this made his marriage with Sudha to fail. Years later, Mahinder and Sudha meet each other at a railway station and both recognized each other easily. They started sharing their experiences after marriage to each other.
