Bollywood sports based movie, Iqbal, directed by Nagesh Kukunoor was released in the year 2005. The movie starred Shreyas Talpade and Shweta Prasad in lead roles while Naseeruddin Shah and Girish Karnad also played important roles in the movie. The movie was distributed under the banner of Mukta Searchlight Films. The superhit music of the film was given by Salim-Sulaiman and the songs were sung by Ravindra Upadhyay, K.K., Sukhwinder Singh and Suresh Wadkar. The movie went on to do well at the box office.

The movie starst with a cricket-obsessed deaf-mute boy, Iqbal ( Shreyas Talpade ), who always dreams of playing cricket for India. he is living in a remote Indian village and always discouraged by his father, anwar ( Yatin Karyekar ). His father wants him to become a farmer like him. But Iqbal’s mother and sister inspires him to go further with his dreams. His sister, Khadija ( Shweta Prasad ), helps him to learn cricket from nearby academy run by Guruji ( Girish Karnad ). But Iqbal is thrown out from the academy by Guruji after he had a fight with a rich boy, Kamal.

Iqbal then seeks help from the local drunkard, Mohit ( Naseeruddin Shah ), who was once a great cricketer. Mohit trains Iqbal for the game and manages to gets him enrolled in a weak Ranji Trophy team of Andhra Pradesh. Iqbal shows his skills in the every game of the tournament and plays brilliantaly on the field. Because of his excellent performance, he is soon noticed by the media and cricket selectors.
