Bollywood musical romantic flick, Jal Bin Machhli Nritya Bin Bijli, directed by Rajaram Vankudre Shantaram was released in the year 1971. The movie starred Abhijeet and Sandhya in lead roles while Dina Pathak, Iftekhar, Vatsala Deshmukh, Ravindra, Sushant Ray, Raja Paranjpe, Vasant Parekh and Birbal also played significant characters in the film. The melodious music of the movie was directed by the famous music director duo Laxmikant Pyarelal while the songs were crooned by Mukesh, Lata Mangeshkar, Aarti Mukherjee etc.

Alkananda Verma aka Alka ( Sandhya ) is living a wealthy lifestyle alongwith her father, Mr. Verma ( Iftekhar ), who is a doctor by profession. Alkananda is fascinated towards dancing and singing and wants to make a career in this field. But Alka’s father wants her to get settled in her life by getting married to someone. He selects a guy for her and arranges for their marraige. But just before the marraige could happen, Alka run away from the house. She ends up arriving at Laitpur.

There she come across a guy named Rajkumar Kailash ( Abhijeet ), who runs a song and dance troup in his palatial house. Soon kailash and Alka falls in love with each other. However, Kailash’s mother wants him to get married with Rajkumari Rupmati ( Minal ). Unfortunately Alka get injured while performing a dance item which later results in a fractured leg. Alka is now a cripple. Kailash insists on marrying her but she refuses as she does not want Kailash to lead a life with a cripple like her.
