The Hindi drama movie, Khandhar was released on 8 June 1984. The movie was directed by Mrinal Sen while Jagdish Chowkhani produced the movie. The star cast of the movie involved Naseruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi while Pankaj Kapoor, Anu Kapoor, Sarla Mazumdar and Geeta Sen played the supporting roles. Premendra and Mrinal Sen did the screenplay. Bhaskar Chandavarkar was the music director of the movie. K K Mahajan did the Cinematography.

Subhash ( Naseruddin Shah ) is portrayed as a professional photographer from the city. Subhash is keen in clicking snaps of old monuments such as temples n other ruins. One day while travelling through one of the villages, he is encountered with a young girl named, Jamini ( Shabana Azmi ).Jamini lives with her old mother ( Gita Sen ). Her mother expects a distant cousin for the marriage of her daughter but he has already been engaged to another girl in Calcutta. She feels crushed under the sorrow of being betrayed and is unable to come out of her ruins of the past.

Subhash seems to be interested in the girl and therefore pretends to be the awaited man. The movie deals with the suspense that whether history would repeat itself and or will she escape the pain of grief in life. At last, her mother dies and subhash with his friends leave the city and Jamini again suffers the pain of solitary in the ruins.
