The movie Koyla was an action cum romantic drama released on April 18, 1997 under the banner of Filmkraft Productions Pvt. Ltd. The top roles in the movie were played by Shahrukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit and Amrish Puri. Other good roles were played by Johny Lever, Kunika and Salim Ghouse. The music was directed by Rajesh Roshan and the singers were Kumar Sanu, Alka Yagnik, Udit Narayan and Kavita Krishnamurthy. The lyrics were written by Indeevar.

In the movie Shankar ( Shahrukh Khan ) is a dumb man working for wealthy Raja Saab ( Amrish Puri ), who treats him like a dog. Raja Saab wanted to marry a very beautiful village girl Gauri ( Madhuri Dixit ). So Raja sends Shankar’s picture to her with marriage proposal. Gauri after seeing Shankar’s picture agreed for marriage. Her dreams got shattered when she came to know about the real truth and she retaliated.

In the meantime Shankar and Gauri fell in love and they ran from Raja’s cage.Raja Saab got enraged and wanted Shankar dead and Gauri back. Shankar was beaten to death and was thrown on mountains where an unknown healer treated him and he could now speak with the coal taken out of his throat. Soon Shanker realized that Raja Saab was the person who killed his parents and put burning coal in his mouth so he could not speak. Thus, Raja wanted revenge.
