The crime drama Lajja was released on August 31, 2001 under the banner of Santoshi Productions. The movie was directed and produced by Rajkumar Santoshi. The top roles in the movie were played by Rekha, Manisha Koirala, Madhuri Dixit and Anil Kapoor while the presence of Mahima Choudhary and Jackie Shroff supported the film. The music of the film was directed by Anu Malik and the songs were sung by Lata Mangeshkar, Shubha Mudgal, Richa Sharma, Anuradha Paudwal, Alka Yagnik and Sonu Nigam.

Thus she has to pay the price of becoming a Dalit and becomes a victim of the darkest side of humanity.

Janki ( Madhuri Dixit ), woman who lives by herself and for herself. She also became the victim of the society when she refused to suffer injustice. Vaidehi ( Manisha Koirala ) was at the feet of the society when she decided to run away from her sufferings. She is a woman who depicts pain. Maithili ( Mahima Chaudhary ) is a bride to-be and came to know about the ill society when she saw her father helpless against the others. This turned her into a rebellious daughter who challenges the world.
