Bollywood romantic musical family drama, Mamta, directed by Asit Sen was released in the year 1966. The movie starred Dharmendra and Suchitra Sen in lead roles while Rajlakshmi Devi, David Abraham, Asit Sen, Pratima devi, Ashok Kumar, Chhaya Devi and Bipin Gupta also played significant characters in the film. The melodious music of the movie was composed by the legendary music director Roshan while the songs were crooned by Mohammed Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, Hemanta Mukherjee etc.

Manish Roy ( Ashok Kumar ) belongs to a wealthy family and is living a happy life alongwith his parents. He is in love with a beautiful girl named Deviyani ( Suchitra Sen ) and wants to get married with her. he is asked to travel aborad in order to complete his education. He makes promise to Deviyani that he will soon return to India after completing his law education. He also promise her that he will stay in touch with her.

But after his departure, deviyani and her father faces a financial crisis. Deviyani seeks help from Manish’s parents but they refuse to help her. Leaving behind with no other option, Deviyani is forced to get married with a much older man. Deviyani gets pregnant and gives birth to a child. Deviyani gets fed up of the regular physical torture by her husband and runs away from the house.
