Songs of Meenaxi: A Tale of Three Cities


The social movie Meenaxi: A Tale of Three Cities was released on April 2, 2004 under the banner of Culture of the Street Films. The movie was directed by M F Hussain and produced by Faiza Hussain and Reima Hussain. The top roles in the movie were played by Tabu, Kunal Kapoor, Raghuveer Yadav and Nadira Babbar. The music of the film was directed by A R Rahman and the songs were sung by Sukhwinder Singh, Asha Bhosle, Sonu Nigam, Murtuza Khan, Reena Bhardwaj and Alka Yagnik.

As the name of the movie “Meenaxi: A Tale of Three Cities” suggests the plot of the movie is set in three cities of Hyderabad, Jaisalmer and Prague. The movie is directed by painter-cum-filmmaker M.F. Hussain who has earlier showcased the magic of Madhuri Dixit in the movie “Gajagamini”. The movie also portrays the three different persona of the lead artist Tabu as Meenaxi, Meenakshi and Maria in three different cities. The movie also revolves around a famous novelist Nawab ( Raghvir Yadav ) from Hyderabad.

Nawab had written a lot of successful stories over the time but now is suffering from a damp phase in his life where he is unable to find an inspirational story to write for more than five years now. One day he comes across an individualistic woman Meenaxi ( Tabu ) at a traditional qawwali ceremony. Nawab is drawn towards her to write an inspirational story on her but she was unwilling to act as the passive subject. She has a variety of characters; she can be the mysterious perfume trader of Hyderabad, the exotic desert bloom of Jaisalmer and the orphaned Maria of Prague.
