Yesteryear classic bollywood movie, Mother India, directed by Mehboob Khan was released in the year 1957. The movie starred Sunil Dutt and Nargis in lead roles while Rajendra Kumar and Raaj Kumar also played important roles in the film. The superhit music of the film was given by Naushad and the songs were sung by Lata Mangeshkar, Manna dey, Mohammed Rafi and Shamshad. The movie went onto become a big blockbuster of that year and still remebered for the beautiful and power packed performance of actress Nargis. The movie was also got nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in the year 1958.

The movie starts with Radha ( Nargis ), who is the ‘mother’ of a small village, is asked to inaugrate a water canal. At that time she remembers back to her past. She was got married to Shamu ( Raaj Kumar ) and the entire wedding was paid for by Shamu’s mother. Later it is revelaed that Shamu’s mother took the loan from the moneylender, Sukhilal ( Kanhaiyalal ) for the marraige of Shamu and Radha. But Sukhilal plays a dirty trick as a result of which Shamu and Radha are forced to pay three quarters of their crop to him.

Conditions becomes even worse for Radha when Shamu and her mother-in-law dies. Sukhilal tries to play another game and asks Radha to get married to him and in return he will relax all her debts. But Radha refuse to his offer. She continues to work in the fields with her children. With the passage of time, Radha’s two son, Birju ( Sunil Dutt ) and Ramu ( Rajendra Kumar ) becomes young. But the problems is still not ended for Radha, infact the real problem begins from here only.
