Bollywood crime drama, Nishaant, directed by Shyam Benegal and written by Satyadev Dubey was released on September 6, 1975. The movie starred Anant Nag and Shabana Azmi in lead roles while Girish Karnad, Naseeruddin Shah, Suresh Bedi, Smita Patil, Sesham Raju, Amrish Puri, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Savita bajaj, Mohan Agashe and Rukmini Menon also played significant characters in the film. The melodious music of the movie was crooned by the well knwon veteran music director Vanraj Bhatia while the songs were rendered by Hitendra Ghosh, Deepak Parashar etc.

Vishwam ( Naseeruddin Shah ) is living a wealthy lifestyle alongwith his father ( Amrish Puri ), who is the influential village Zamindar. His words are treated as the law in the village and nobody in the village dare to speak against him and his family. Vishwam is not like his father and brother, who are heavily indulge in alcohol and women. Vishwam is married to Rukmani ( Smita Patil ) and loves her very much. But his life gets upturned when a schoolmaster ( Girish Karnad ) enters in the village alongwith his beautiful wife, Sushila ( Shabana Azmi ).

Vishwam get attracted towards Sushila. He tries to take off his mind from her but fails. Then one night, Schoolmaster witnesses his wife being abducted by two mens. He tries to stop them but fails. School master wants his wife back and knows it very well that it will proved out to be a very hard task for him. He decides to take help of police but soon realizes that police force is also with Zamindar. Now What will Schoolmaster do in order to bring back his wife.
