Bollywood movie, Parineeta, directed by Pradeep Sarkar was released on June 10, 2005. The movie starred Saif Ali Khan, Sanjay Dutt and Vidya Balan in the lead roles while Raima sen, Rekha and Dia Mirza also played important roles in the film. The hit music of the film was given by Shantanu Moitra. The songs of the film were sung by Sonu Nigam, Shreya Ghosal, Sunidhi Chauhan, Chitra etc. The film was distributed under the banner of Vinod Chopra Productions. The movie is supposed to be inspired by a Bengali novella, Parineeta written by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. The director, Pradeep Sarkar, won the prestigious National Award for Best First Film. The movie also won five Filmfare Awards.

The movie starts with the marriage of Shekhar ( Saif Ali Khan ) and Gayatri Tantya ( Diya Mirza ). Shekar goes to meet Vasundhara, a widow living in his neighbourhood. He also meets Lolita and becomes angry with the converstaion. An angry Shekhar comes back home. He starts playing his favorite tune on his piano. Now the movie goes in flashback, where Shekhar is playing the Rabindranath Tagore’s tune for Lolita. Shekhar’s father wants him to marry Gayatri Tantya, daughter of a rich businessman. Then enters Girish ( Sanjay Dutt) , a steel tycoon from London, who evetually falls in love with Lolita.

Shekhar and Lolita apparently get married without anyone’s knowledge. Shekhar fly off to Darjeeling on a business trip. But when he returns from the trip, he gets a note of Lolita and Girish’s marriage. Shekhar get shocked and in the anger he scowls at Lolita. He also becomes agree to marry Gayatri. Now the film returns to Shekhar’s wedding night. Girish meets Shekhar to tell him that he has married, Koel ( Raima sen ), as Lolita denied his marriage proposal. Shekhar feels embarrased and shameful.
